Building knowledge and open data
Generating and sharing data on wildlife mortality from energy and transport infrastructure to enable transparent and science-based mitigation

Connecting science and practice
Turning research into real-world solutions to reduce wildlife mortality and support biodiversity-friendly infrastructure

Developing a global community
Bringing experts together worldwide to share knowledge and reduce infrastructure impacts on wildlife
Challenges

The urgency of a sustainable transition
To deal with climate change, we need to transition toward cleaner energy and more sustainable transport systems.

Infrastructure growth as a threat to Biodiversity
The rapid expansion of power lines, wind farms, railways, and roads can negatively affect wildlife and undermine conservation efforts globally.

Balancing progress with Nature
This calls for innovative, nature-conscious approaches that balance development with the protection of biodiversity.
What is RISKY?
RISKY is a digital platform that brings together open data and scientific knowledge on wildlife mortality caused by electrocutions and collisions at energy and transport infrastructures.
It offers powerful tools to analyse, predict, and visualize the impacts on terrestrial vertebrate populations, supporting more informed and environmentally responsible decision-making.
We are a consortium of four research institutions supported by GBIF Portugal and Spain as well as the Renewables Grid Initiative.

Our vision

Build
a global community dedicated to making energy and transport infrastructure safer for wildlife.

Fosters
cross-sector and cross-regional collaboration by promoting the exchange of knowledge and open data.

Support
the adoption of wildlife-friendly practices and more sustainable infrastructure planning worldwide.

mortality locations
We are compiling the locations of wildlife collisions and electrocutions with the aim of making the data openly accessible. To date, we have collected over 200,000 roadkill records that are ready to be shared.
Learn moreanalytical tools
We are developing user-friendly tools to estimate the risk of collision or electrocution, as well as the risk of local extinction resulting from mortality associated with energy and transport infrastructure.
Learn moresensitivity maps
We are developing open-access sensitivity maps to identify areas at highest risk of wildlife collision or electrocution, as well as areas where species are most at risk of local extinction.

Get involved with RISKY

Share mortality data
If you have data on collisions or electrocution related to power lines, wind farms, or railway infrastructure, we can include it in data papers and offer authorship.
Connect us with key stakeholders
If you have contacts at road agencies, public administration offices, energy operators, or other relevant stakeholders, we would love to engage them in this initiative.

Spread the word
If you share our project within your networks will help us reach more researchers, students, agencies, and organizations working on energy and transport infrastructure.
