Challenges

The urgency of a sustainable transition

The urgency of a sustainable transition

To deal with climate change, we need to transition toward cleaner energy and more sustainable transport systems.

Infrastructure growth as a threat to Biodiversity

Infrastructure growth as a threat to Biodiversity

The rapid expansion of power lines, wind farms, railways, and roads can negatively affect wildlife and undermine conservation efforts globally.

Balancing progress with Nature

Balancing progress with Nature

This calls for innovative, nature-conscious approaches that balance development with the protection of biodiversity.

What is RISKY?

RISKY is a digital platform that brings together open data and scientific knowledge on wildlife mortality caused by electrocutions and collisions at energy and transport infrastructures.

It offers powerful tools to analyse, predict, and visualize the impacts on terrestrial vertebrate populations, supporting more informed and environmentally responsible decision-making.

We are a consortium of four research institutions supported by GBIF Portugal and Spain as well as the Renewables Grid Initiative.

Working towards a wildlife-friendly energy & transport infrastructure

mortality locations

We are compiling the locations of wildlife collisions and electrocutions with the aim of making the data openly accessible. To date, we have collected over 200,000 roadkill records that are ready to be shared.

analytical tools

We are developing user-friendly tools to estimate the risk of collision or electrocution, as well as the risk of local extinction resulting from mortality associated with energy and transport infrastructure.

Learn more

sensitivity maps

We are developing open-access sensitivity maps to identify areas at highest risk of wildlife collision or electrocution, as well as areas where species are most at risk of local extinction.
